Every child growing up in the 80s remembers the obnoxious Poprock candy in its classic Cherry, Orange and Grape flavors.  Some came in packs of three with those compressed powdered candy sticks.  Some came with those clear foot lollipops (my personal favorite).  For the brave souls, you could also purchase free standing packets to pour right into your mouth.

I had forgotten all about this nostalgic sweet until I received a curious envelope in the mail addressed to the Party Planner.  Hmm…after a quick shake I heard the familiar rattle, could it be?  Along with a brochure for a group that throws 80s themed parties was my very own party in a bag, Poprocks.  Growing up in China, my co-worker has never seen or heard of such things.

After my brief explanation about the popping candy, she tentatively put a couple of crystals on her tongue.  She was immediately fascinated by the effects.  She proceeded to then put a small pile in the cap of her water bottle and added it in to watch the bubbling and crackling.  Then, she added the rest to a cup of water that she snuck up next to my ear so that I may also enjoy the party in the cup.  I suppose there are some things we never grow out of.

Keeping that in mind, it may be time to adapt poprocks for us grown up kids who still find fascination in things that pop and crackle.  The poprocks website features recipes that prove that it’s not something that’s just for kids.

  1. HAHAHA. “Pary in a cup”? You know what we definitely have to do now– have a Poprocks and Purple Drank party. What could be more perfect?!
